… four Grierson families all have documented connections to SW Scotland, with a span of 150 – 350 years according to the various records. One representative is located in the USA, two are in England, one is in Australia. None have a direct family legend of descent from the Lag family, although one has a connecting historical claim.

Redbank

Redbank has a small part in Grierson family history. Originally a farm, Robert, son of William Grierson of Lag was recorded as the owner in 1629 it then passed on to Robert, son of Sir John Grierson of Lag and sold in 1677.

Elizabeth Crichton dedicated her life and fortune to setting up the Crichton Royal Hospital, a care institute for the elderly and insane. However, to carry out all her wishes she had to fight her husband’s brother through the courts and even on to appeal at the House of Lords as he tried to stop her charitable trusts.

James Greirson of Caipinoch (b. Dumfries c1641 – d. Edinburgh 1662)

It’s not certain what year James Greirson was born but we do know that he was an apprentice apothecary in 1661 which would give him a likely age of anything between 16 and 24. We know this as James is recorded in the Midlothian: Edinburgh – Register of Apprentices, 1583-1666.

Tracing your Grierson tree

Scotland has a different legal system to the rest of Britain which affects the types of records that are kept. New Register House in Edinburgh, holds BMD records and parish registers for Scotland.

Civil registration was introduced in 1855 and Scottish certiflcates contain the same information as those in England, but with a few major additions regarding BMD.
