The Grierson family originated in the Lowland area of south-west Scotland, in Galloway and around the Nith Valley.
There is no Clan tradition in this region of Scotland, and as such, there has never been a Clan Grierson. Important historical families in the area are referred to locally by the term ‘Family’ – hence the ‘Grierson Family’. In recent years, the term ‘Clan’ has become synonymous with all Scottish names whether from the Highlands and Islands or from other areas of Scotland and as a consequence many people outside of Scotland have come to believe that all Scottish families are Clans. A useful map of the Clan areas of Scotland can be found here. There are no known Grierson or Greer societies around the world at the time of writing, but there are several Facebook groups where Grierson and Greer descendants exchange information and news. Perhaps one of these will develop an organised society in the future.
